Adam Dunn: A Cure for the Chicago Cubs’ Offensive Woes

August 24, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

I can safely say that I am a gigantic fan of Adam Dunn. Consistency is one of the main benchmarks for picking my favorite players, and he very simply gets the job done. He is a freak of patience and power, but the consistent production is what draws me to him. For instance, his production from 2007 to 2009 looks a little something like this: 2007   .264 AVG/.386 OBP (101 walks)/40 home runs 2008   .236 AVG/.386 OBP (122 walks)/40 home runs 2009   .267 AVG/.398 OBP (116 walks)/38 home runs The common thought is imagining what those numbers would look like if ...

Casey Coleman’s Case for the Chicago Cubs’ 2011 Rotation

August 24, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Cubs rookie pitcher Casey Coleman has enjoyed varying game-to-game success, inducing a plethora of ground balls and keeping the ball out of the air in general. The 15th-round draft pick in 2008 doesn’t have blue-chip prospect "stuff," but he can certainly provide some value out of the Cubs’ fifth spot in the rotation. Coleman works with a solid two-seam fastball that hovers around 90 m.p.h., as does his four-seam fastball. His two-seamer has good run, which is where he gets his majority of ground balls, while his four-seamer has a bit more of a cutting action. Cubs fans, if you are expecting ...

Cubs Don’t Retire Sosa’s Jersey, Sammy’s All Corked Up About It

August 24, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Sammy Sosa tell's Chicago Magazine he's miffed the Chicago Cubs didn't retire his Jersey # 21. He says they "don't appreciate him." Sosa goes on to say "the number should be untouchable because of the things that I did for that organization." Untouchable? Really, Sammy? Untouchable? Can you say records tainted by steroids? Can you say embarrassing incident involving a broken bat? Can you understand, just a little bit, why they might be reluctant? Do we need bring back up the corking? If so, look below, here it is, as it appeared in 2003. The story was everywhere. It even followed you ...

Cubs Catcher Geovany Soto’s Quiet Season

August 24, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Geovany Soto made a solid statement his 2008 rookie season, slugging his way to a .371 wOBA, third among Major League catchers (Brian McCann and Joe Mauer). He also tied for the Major League lead among catchers with 23 home runs. Soto followed his impressive rookie campaign with a pretty severe sophomore slump, much to the chagrin of Cubs fans and potential fantasy owners predicting him to repeat or build upon his first season.  Soto hit for a mere .310 wOBA in his second season in the bigs and was hit with the recoil of working 141 games behind the plate his rookie ...

Chicago Cubs: Sammy Sosa Angry No. 21 Is Not Retired in Chicago

August 24, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

He just won't seem to go away. Sammy Sosa said in an interview with Chicago Magazine his number should be retired in the Chicago Cubs organization. "That number should be untouchable because of the things that I did for that organization," Sosa said. "That right there shows me that they don't care about me and they don't want to have a good relationship with me. "My numbers don't lie," Sosa continued. "Everything that I did was so big — my career was so good — that even if people want to scratch it from the board, it's not going to happen. Those numbers ...

The Chicago Cubs’ Five Steps For Winning the World Seres By 2014

August 23, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Yesterday afternoon, Lou Piniella managed his final game with the Chicago Cubs. And in typical Cubs fashion, they lost, bad, 16-5.Its hard to believe that, save for a few players, this is the same Cubs team that posted the best record in the National League in 2008. Now the Cubs are in 5th place, with only the bargain basement Pirates keeping them from last in the NL Central (but only by 9.5 games mind you).In the past month, we've seen half of our infield and a starting pitcher traded away, as well as  Piniella's recent retirement. The Cubs aren't in a position to win ...

Wait Until… 2012 Cubs Fans

August 23, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Jim Hendry has gone on record saying that the Cubs are “three or four” solid moves away from competing in 2011. I would contend that most teams are within that range, depending on your definition of a “solid” move. If the Pittsburgh Pirates could sign Cliff Lee, Adam Dunn, Carl Crawford, and another star in the offseason, they would probably be able to contend in the Central too. The problem with the Cubs is their current makeup. It’d be one thing if they had open positions where the solution would be to go out and sign a big name to take over.  Currently, that ...

Carlos Marmol, Disgusting.

August 23, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

To commemorate Carlos Marmol’s 100th strike-out this season, I’ve decided to highlight one of the few bright spots in amid an awful season for the franchise. Marmol, in his first full season as the team’s closer has certainly showed why he should be among the game’s elite relievers. Carlos Marmol’s 2010 campaign will be highlighted as a massive step forward in his career, as he eclipsed both the aforementioned 100 strike-out mark, as well as the 2 WAR mark for the first time in his young career. By far, the most frustrating aspect about Marmol’s game has been his inability to ...

MLB Power Rankings Week 21: The Legendary Lou Piniella Says Goodbye

August 23, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Last month, Lou Piniella told the Cubs he would be retiring at season's end. Well apparently he got sick of watching the Cubs get beaten to a bloody pulp. Sunday's 16-5 loss was his last game as a manger. He leaves as one of the greatest managers of all time. Unfortunately he went out on a bad note. The Cubs have been a major disappointment, and not even the legendary Piniella could save them. Sweet Lou should be in the Hall of Fame in five years. He cited the need to be with his ailing mother as the main reason ...

Lou Piniella Steps Down, Mike Quade Steps Up for Chicago Cubs

August 23, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Lou Piniella began his career in professional baseball in 1962 as an 18-year-old outfielder for the Cleveland Indians' Class D affiliate Selma Cloverleafs of the Alabama-Florida league. After 23 seasons playing professional baseball (including 18 big league seasons), another 23 seasons managing in the big leagues, and a few seasons as a general manager or broadcaster, "Sweet Lou" likely put on a big league uniform for the final time Sunday. It was just over a month ago that Piniella made public his intention to retire, so we all knew this day was coming before too long. What we didn't expect was that ...
