MLB Rumors: Ryne Sandberg Steps Up As a Candidate for Blue Jays Manager Job

September 22, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

According to Fox Sports' Jon Paul Morosi, the Toronto Blue Jays have added a new name to the list of managers that could be hired to replace their current skipper, Cito Gaston. Some of the candidates, like Brian Butterfield and Rob Thomson, are stationed in the American League East right now and could remain in the same division if they take the job offer.  Ryne Sandberg is one of the biggest names out there right now for an available manager's job. He has prepared enough in the minors and his reputation in the Major Leagues is very good. The Cubs are the ...

MLB Trade Rumors: Chicago Cubs May Have Interest In Ryan Doumit

September 22, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

It has been a quick and decisive fall from grace for Pittsburgh Pirates catcher/outfielder Ryan Doumit. In 2008, Doumit looked like a future superstar. He hit .318/.357/.501, and was worth 3.6 WAR despite poor defense behind home plate. That winter, the Pirates signed Doumit to a three-year contract with club options for 2012-13. The future looked bright. It has not been so. Doumit struggled to stay healthy in 2009, playing in only 75 games. He has also run into injury problems this season, and the Pirates moved decisively in another direction when they traded for Diamondbacks catcher Chris Snyder in July. Snyder has ...

Tyler Colvin Incident a Wake-Up Call For MLB To Ban Maple Bats

September 20, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

What will it take to force Major League Baseball to finally outlaw maple bats? A player losing an eye…a brain injury…or even worse? In Sunday’s Cubs game against the Marlins, Cubs rookie outfielder Tyler Colvin was punctured in the chest by a piece of a broken maple bat that just narrowly missed puncturing his lung. He did, however, have to be hospitalized, where they treated Colvin with a chest tube to prevent a collapsed lung and the incident will end his season. It has long been obvious that the harder maple bats are a lot more dangerous than softer ash wood bats as ash ...

Geovany Soto Out for Season: Chicago Cubs Glimpse Future at Catcher

September 20, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Chicago Cubs catcher Geovany Soto will have season-ending surgery on his right shoulder, according to MLB.com. Soto, 27, was baseball's best offensive catcher when healthy this year, and will be ready for spring training nest February.  During the team's final two weeks, however, backup Koyie Hill will see the bulk of the playing time, according to Cubs manager Mike Quade. Here enters the controversy. Hill, 31, has been predictably abysmal this season. His somewhat overblown defensive prowess has never been enough to offset his offensive helplessness: Over the past two seasons, only two players (well-known stinkers Jeff Mathis and Willy Taveras) have ...

Chicago Cubs Wild Card: Team Needs Pitching, Should Take Look at Barret Loux

September 16, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

When the Arizona Diamondbacks drafted Barret Loux with the sixth overall pick in the 2010 MLB amateur Draft, many said the move was aimed at saving money: Loux was projected to go later in the first round, and was reportedly willing to sign for a smaller bonus than any other promising prospect Arizona could have had in the sixth slot. Unfortunately, Loux and the Diamondbacks parted ways with no agreement last month, after a thorough physical and MRI revealed risk factors in Loux's elbow and shoulder with which Arizona was not comfortable. Normally, failure to sign in situations like this would ...

Chicago Cubs Complete The Sweep of The Cardinals in St. Louis With A 7-3 Victory

September 16, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

The Cubs just did something Wednesday night they haven’t done in the last 12 years—sweeping the Cardinals in St. Louis.  Homers by Tyler Colvin and Aramis Ramirez and another Carlos Zambrano’s strong outing helped the team to win 7-3 in the three-game series finale.  It has been two nights in a row that the Cubs knocked the top two Cardinals aces out of the game.  Last night, it was Adam Wainwright.  Tonight, it was Chris Carpenter’s turn. The first run of the game belonged to the Cubs.  Carpenter (15-7) gave up a single to Koyie Hill who stole second and was brought home ...

Cubs-Cardinals: Randy Wells Pitches Eight Strong Innings in Chicago’s 7-2 Win

September 15, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

The Chicago Cubs proved on Tuesday night that Cy Young candidate Adam Wainwright is beatable. They managed to get five runs off him to set up their second victory in as many nights in Busch Stadium. They beat the St. Louis Cardinals by a final score of 7-2. At the same time, they prevented Wainwright from becoming the National League pitcher with the most wins this season. Randy Wells pitched a gem to snap his personal two-game winless streak. He gave up only one run and five hits in eight innings, fanning five Cardinals without issuing a walk. The right-hander (7-13) also contributed ...

Southpaw Staying Power: Sean Marshall Should Be Extended by Cubs This Winter

September 14, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

This might be hard to believe, but Sean Marshall has probably been better than most Chicago Cubs fans think this season. Marshall, who turned 28 last month, has had a marvelous season in the Cubs' bullpen in 2010. His 6-5 record reflects the confidence both Lou Piniella and Mike Quade have shown in Marshall, using him in tie games 21 times and on back-to-back days 25 times. Yet there are numbers in Marshall's stat line this season that leap off the page unexpectedly. He has nearly 11 strikeouts per nine innings, good for 13th in baseball. Largely because of that newfound whiff ability, Marshall ...

Chicago Cubs Aramis Ramirez Cannot Decide If He Is Coming or Going

September 14, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

One minute, Cubs third baseman Aramis Ramirez is quoted as considering the possibility of not picking up his option for 2011. The next thing you know he’s telling the Sun-Times, ''I'm staying here, put it that way.'' This sounds to me like a guy who is working with the Cubs front office to restructure his contract. Instead of paying Ramirez $14.6 million next year and then buying out his 2010 season for $2 million, perhaps the Cubs are going to extend the deal with more team-friendly, year-to-year salaries while giving Ramirez the longer-term extension he desires. It had been suggested ...
