Chicago Cubs Hire Mike Quade: 10 Reasons He’s a Better Hire than Ryne Sandberg

October 19, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

The Chicago Cubs have hired Mike Quade as permanent manager for 2011 and beyond, and have officially removed his interim tag from 2010.He did a fantastic job in his short time as skipper in Chicago, and deserved this opportunity after a long career in the minors.Did he deserve the spot over Cubs hero and fan favorite Ryne Sandberg, however? Many fans may disagree, much like the dispute in New York over Don Mattingly's prospects of managing before Joe Girardi's eventual hire. That said, it is far more important for the Cubs to hire someone who already knows the players, and is ...

The Chicago Cubs have named Mike Quade their manager and signed him to a two-year contract, according to the Chicago Tribune. Quade returns to the Cubs dugout full-time after going 24-13 as interim manager of the team following manager Lou Piniella's retirement in August. Quade served as a coach and minor-league manager in the Cubs organization for seven season prior to getting his shot to manage in the big leagues, but impressed Cubs management with his handling of young players like Starlin Castro and Andrew Cashner. Quade is an inside hire, which the team had long hinted would be a preferred ...

Favorite Team Got You Down? Read This To Get Over Disappointing Losses.

There are lots of books available to help you cope with grieving, but none of those books cover the experience of watching your favorite team lose.  This type of loss typically takes days to get over, and the degree of sorrow differs depending on your enthusiasm for the disappointing team.  Some losses hurt more than others.  Last second plays that end teams' seasons, championship hopes, or playoff runs tend to hurt the most.   There are typically five stages of grieving associated with the loss of a beloved team.  First comes DENIAL.  In football, this typically comes before the last second has ...

MLB Trade Rumors: Proposed 2011 Chicago Cubs 25-Man Roster

October 18, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

The baseball season is still underway, but for Cubs fans, it has been over for quite some time now. As the loyal fan base is perennially "waiting until next year", it is time to once again look ahead with hope and anticipation for another season on the North Side. The fact of the matter is that the Cubs are shackled by some awful contracts at the moment, and will not be able to make a significant splash in the free agent market for at least a couple more seasons. That said, with the contracts of Derrek Lee, Ted Lilly, and Xavier Nady ...

Evaluating Larry Rothschild

October 16, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Larry Rothschild has exercised his option to remain as the Cubs pitching coach for another season. Apparently this means that if it is OK with the new manager, he gets to stay. One of the odd things about Jim Hendry's tenure as GM is the number of no-trade contracts and player's and coach's options he has handed out. Generally speaking, I would suppose that these are not a good thing, especially with respect to coaches. One would suppose that team management would not want to tie the field manager's ...

October 16, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

This is part two of a series of articles outlining the decisions that the Cubs will need to make this offseason. You can read part one and introduce yourself to their current situation by following this link. The Chicago Cubs have technically been without a manager since Lou Piniella stepped down on August 22 and without a manager for 2011 since he announced his intention to retire a month earlier. Several names have been thrown about since then, including bench coach Alan Trammell, Triple-A manager Ryne Sandberg, announcer Bob Brenly, Joe Girardi, Fredi Gonzalez, Eric Wedge, Bob Melvin and Pat Listach. ...

Cubs Managerial Search Is a Two-Horse Race: Handicapping the Next Cubs Skipper

October 13, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

The final trial runs have been completed, and the horses are on the track and ready for the home stretch. So who will come spinning out of the turn as the one to beat in the race to be the Cubs' next manager?  This search, led by Cubs GM Jim Hendry, has been a bit befuddling. Owner Tom Ricketts told the media that the next Cubs manager had to understand the “Cubs thing.” In other words, had to intimately understand the fans' frustration with Chicago's failure to make the World Series since the soldiers came home after the last World ...

Sandy Alderson Exactly What Tom Ricketts Needs To Help Evaluate Chicago Cubs

October 11, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

According to MLBTradeRumors.com, Sandy Alderson "asked and received permission from Bud Selig to interview with the Mets for the GM vacancy next Thursday or Friday, and The New York Post's Joel Sherman says that's an indication that Alderson wants the job badly." OK, fine, let him go and generally manage the Mets. Meanwhile, why hasn't Cubs owner Tom Ricketts inquired about a guy like Alderson to help him evaluate Jim Hendry and the club since he admits he is not a baseball guy? Even if Alderson isn't available, perhaps he could lure a guy like former Braves GM John Schuerholz, or hell, ...

Chicago Cubs: Looming Offseason Decisions, Part I (Introduction)

October 10, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

I'm sure that there are more than a handful of Cubs fans who are under the impression that the organization will acquire a few impact players this offseason, much like the post-2006 and post-2007 offseasons. However, the fact of the matter is that the team's current 40-man roster will need to be tweaked quite a bit before any additions can be made. To begin with, only two players on the team's final 40-man roster can leave on their own volition: Aramis Ramirez and Xavier Nady. Since Ramirez has already made it clear that he will be exercising the $14.6 million player option on ...
