Should Reliever Kerry Wood Be Pursued by the Chicago Cubs?

November 8, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Cubs nation was buzzing a bit last week—not because of a potential Adam Dunn signing or because they managed to trade Kosuke Fukudome for a bucket of balls, but because Jim Hendry hinted at the Cubs potentially taking a look at former closer, and fan favorite, Kerry Wood. Wood was let go following the 2008 season, when he was replaced as the setup man following the trade for Kevin Gregg. It was considered a mistake at the time, with Hendry giving away a pair of key role players, and class acts, in Wood and Mark DeRosa before replacing them in the clubhouse ...

Chicago Cubs ‘Boss’ Goes Undercover: Can This Ownership Group Get Any Weirder?

November 8, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

If you took the time to watch Sunday night's episode of CBS' Undercover Boss featuring Todd Ricketts, I feel sorry for you. Didn't you have anything better to do, like watching paint dry? It was the Cubs owners' turn to pretend to be just regular guys and do menial tasks in front of hidden cameras. All I can say is if Todd Ricketts, younger brother of chief Cubs mouthpiece Tom, is any indication of the family smarts, then Cubs fans are in for another century-long drought. To say that the younger Ricketts is uncomfortable being a regular guy is an understatement. He is ...

Chicago Cubs: Finding a First Base Option Looks To Be Troublesome

November 8, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Seven seasons ago, the Cubs traded Hee-Seop Choi and Mike Nannini for Derek Lee to fill the glaring hole left at first base since the departure of fan favorite Mark Grace in 2000. The two players that Lee was acquired for hardly made a splash in the Major Leagues, while Lee has been a two-time All Star, a two-time Gold Glove winner, and placed third in MVP voting in those seven seasons. Needless to say, the Cubs were the big winners in the trade. This past August however, the Cubs themselves traded Lee for a few minor leaguers (Jeffrey Lorick, Robinson Lopez, ...

Chicago Cubs: How about a Fukudome for Rowand Trade?

November 6, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

I saw a post on mlbtraderumors.com today stating the Cubs are interested in moving Kosuke Fukudome this offseason.  That won’t be easy, given the $13.5 million in 2011 salary Fukudome has coming to him under the last year of his contract. Nonetheless, the article notes that the Cubs were able to move clubhouse-cancer Milton Bradley last offseason and actually get something out of the deal, so anything is possible. One such possibility might be a trade for the Giants’ Aaron Rowand.  Rowand has $12 million coming to him in each of 2011 and 2012, the last two years of the five-year, $60 ...

First Things First: Chicago Cubs’ First-Base Options

November 6, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

It makes me a little uneasy to not be penciling in Derrek Lee at first base for the Cubs next season.Since I was 14 years old, I've only known him manning first. Lee was ever the defensive specialist, and I grew jaded in simply expecting him to make every play, every single difficult pick.Lee got it all done with ease, and I would mention his Gold Gloves if I felt the award had any merit (which it doesn't). Yet his defensive prowess is actually very deserved. That's not all with the big man. To top things off, he had two ...

Why the Chicago Cubs Survey Is Offensive to This Cubs Fan

November 2, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

When I went online to Cubs.com to take their survey, it offers the following choices of fandom: Which of the following describes you? (select all that apply)       Full season Cubs ticket holder (81 games) Combo Plan or Double Play Plan Cubs season ticket holder     PNC Club of Chicago ticket holder   Annual suite holder   Suite daily renter   Member of Cubs season ticket waitlist   Casual Cubs fan / attend occasional Cubs games   Now, I am offended by the implication that if you only attend occasional games you are a "casual Cubs fan." Not only is that wrong; it is insulting. For one thing, what if you can't go to ...

Chicago Cubs: Looming Offseason Decisions, Part III (In-House Pitching Options)

November 2, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

This is part three of a series of articles outlining the decisions that the Cubs will need to make this offseason. You can read part two by following this link. Ryan Dempster, Carlos Marmol, Sean Marshall, Jeff Samardzija, and Carlos Zambrano are all pretty safe bets to break camp with the Cubs when they finish up in Mesa next year. Marmol and Marshall did more than enough to earn whatever salary raise they end up getting this offseason. Dempster didn't have his best season, but he put in 215.1 strong innings with 208 strikeouts (one less than his career high) and a 3.85 ERA. Samardzija, who ...

Evaluating Jim Hendry

November 1, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

If you want to classify the tenure of Jim Hendry as a Cubs executive, well, he definitely joins the ranks of nothing special or worse. When we stop to think about the Hendry era, we sometimes don't realize how far back it goes—all the way back to 1995 when he headed up the farm system, and to 2002 when he officially took over as GM. That's a long time with very little tangible achievement. Sure, they won three division titles, but they have not built a perennial contender. If I had to sum ...
