A Ford crossover pulls up to my dad’s apartment in downtown Chicago with an American Insulation sticker on the rear window. I get in and sit next to an Italian-American kid with a jet-black, scruffy beard and a blue University of Kentucky hat. “That’s him,” my friend tells me as we enter the car. “That’s the man himself.” “The man” is Johnny Macchione, a 23-year-old, who lives with his parents in Bartlett, Ill., a suburb an hour north of Chicago. He continues to play recreational soccer after stints with Loris College (Dubuque, Iowa) and Elgin (Ill.) Community College, works for his ...

April 17, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Have the Chicago Cubs taken over the title of "Most Cursed Organization" from the Boston Red Sox?  Keep reading to find the answer to this and many more questions burning in your mind. Starlin Castro and Alfonso Soriano started the season with a bang, but can they keep it up? For now, riddle me this—which Major League Baseball franchise could have Kerry Hilson's "Knock You Down" as a theme song? Answer—the Cubs. Other major league teams have loved knocking the Cubs down, but they keep getting back up. In fact, the "Lovable Losers" have been getting back up since 1908—the last time they won the World ...

Chicago Cubs: Their First 4 Series

April 16, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

The Cubs finished up their first two home series against arguably the two worst teams in the National League even at 3-3. They should certainly have gone 4-2 against these teams and probably 5-1. The outcome is not a cause for panic, but still a disturbing sign. They followed up with a tough series loss to the Brewers, when they blew the lead in the rubber game on Sunday, then a series win against the Astros, losing only the throwaway game on Tuesday when they figured to lose anyway starting Russell against Myers.  All in all, they should be at least 8-4 ...

So Where Do Your Favorite Chicago Cub Players Live?

With a tip o’ the cap to The Big Lead, I came across an article in the Chicago Tribune about Chicago Cubs’ LHP Sean Marshall‘s latest purchase. Apparently Marshall has paid $1.7 million for a 17-room, 7,400 square foot house in Lincolnwood. Marshall’s new crib has six and-a-half baths, four fireplaces, glass walls, wood beams, a guest apartment suite with an elevator, a master suite that adjoins an indoor pool and spa, a theater and a billiard room with a dumbwaiter to the kitchen. This house sounds pretty sick. What’s even more sick is that Marshall has only ...

Chicago Cubs: 4 Ways to Cut Payroll at the MLB Trade Deadline

April 13, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

It's a well worn tale. The Chicago Cubs are off to a shaky start. After spending big money over the winter on Carlos Pena and trading for Matt Garza, the Cubbies thought they had improved themselves in the National League Central. Milwaukee, however, did some improving of their own in picking up Shaun Marcum and Zack Greinke. Before we know it, it'll be June and the Cubs will be out of the pennant race. Jim Hendry will have to decide how to cut payroll so that next year he can sign a new batch of stiffs. Here are four ways the Cubs can cut payroll ...

Harry Caray Grandson Video: Watch His Audition Tape for Cubs P.A. Job

April 12, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

There's a video of Harry Caray's grandson that's making its way across the sports world today, after it was revealed that he had auditioned for the Cubs recently-vacant P.A. announcer gig.  Josh Caray—grandson of Harry Caray, son of Skip Caray and brother to Chip Caray—posted his tape on YouTube, in which he introduces himself, provides the proof of his famous heritage and reads a bit of copy to the camera.  Caray's delivery is fluid and solid, although he's a bit understated. He's got an old-school feel to his reading of the lines, a la legendary Yankees announcer Bob Sheppard, with just a ...

MLB Power Rankings: All Pre-1920 MLB Franchises in Order of Success

April 12, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

With the success of my article ranking all the franchises for all-time on their success and based on a suggestion from my colleague here at Bleacher Report, Matt Strobl; I decided to break this down even further into eras.  Why?  Well, some of the older franchises benefitted greatly from early success but their lack of success over the last couple of decades really didn't hurt them too much in the rankings.  Also, some of the expansion franchises were hurt in the rankings by having to compete against teams with 80 or more seasons under their belt in comparison, so I wanted ...

Going to a game at Wrigley Field in Chicago is an experience that every passionate baseball fan should aspire to at least once in their lives. The baseball game itself is in many instances secondary to what's going on throughout the ballpark. While the beloved Chicago Cubs haven't won a World Series championship since 1908, it doesn't deter fans from making the trek to Wrigley Field and participating in the overall experience. The Cubs have always done a terrific job in ensuring that its fans receive a great experience as well, and despite their lack of success on the field, Wrigley Field ...

MLB Trade Ideas: Analyzing 10 Top Cubs Prospects’ Odds of Being Moved

April 8, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

The Cubs are a team that is currently strapped for cash as far as their payroll is concerned, but with the contracts of Kosuke Fukudome, Aramis Ramirez, Carlos Pena, Carlos Silva, and John Grabow all coming off the books at the end of the season, they could be in line to make a splash this off season.Another option could be dealing for one of a handful of top players that will be hitting free agency this season, in order to get a jump on re-signing them to a long term deal, and to contend this year.Any deal of that sort ...
