Aramis Ramirez: The Catalyst The Cubs Have Been Looking For?

July 29, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Aramis Ramirez went down with a terrible injury this past May verse the Brewers when he dove for a ground ball and hurt his shoulder. People thought he would never be the same this year.  People thought he would be just like Derrek Lee when he came off his wrist injury. It pretty much took Lee a season and a half to get his power back. Even Ramirez doubted himself. He was quoted as saying, "I can't hit a home run if my life depended on it." He was wrong. Everyone was wrong. Ramirez went down with the injury on May 8 and ...

5 Guys That Should Still Be In A Cubs Uniform.

With the trading deadline rapidly approaching and teams making deals to improve their chances of making it to October here are five guys that shouldn't have been traded or let go by the Cubs during the off-season. After winning 97 games last year Cubs GM Jim Hendry tried to do too much in order to improve this teams left-handed hitting woes. To his credit, Hendry has made quality moves in the past, however he did too much to improve something that wasn't broken.

Perception Issues: Career Year vs. Bad Free Agent Signing

Cubs fans are great.  But they're incredibly inept at judging a player's talent, as most fans can be.  We're going to compare two players.  One would have an approval rating around 20% and one would have an approval rating around 85%. My favorite book in the world is entitled, "The Book" by Tom Tango.  Rather than go through the whole book, I'll go to my favorite part: wOBA.  wOBA is a great stat because it adds value to OBP.  You see, OPS is an OK stat, but it equally weighs both OBP and SLG.  Getting on-base is more valuable, statistically and conceptually.  ...

What The Bush League: Showboat Soriano Edition

July 28, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

So does anyone else think this guy is an absolute clown? By hitting a walk off grand slam, which counts just as much as a walk-off single, Alfonso Soriano won the game for the Cubs last night against the Astros. Great for the Cubs, celebrate as a team and enjoy the victory, they deserved it. The Cubs were able to sit alone atop the NL Central with this win, a great reason for celebration as a team. Apparently, Soriano saw this as an opportunity to shine as an individual. In true clown fashion, Soriano felt the need to trot the bases waving his hand over ...

Wrigley Field: After All These Years, Still a Perfect 10

Over the last couple of months, we have reviewed a lot of new stadiums for our Stadium 411 category here on The Ghost of Moonlight Graham.  Well, now it’s time to look at some of the old shrines of the game. Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs, is one of the great stadiums in the game today. It’s a must-see for any baseball fan. Today’s stadium critique is given by a man who is salivating over the thought of Matt Holliday and Albert Pujols in the same lineup, a man who once personally watched former WWE wrestler Dr. Tom Pritchard’s ...

Will the Cubs Crash the Cardinals Celebration?

Don’t look now but a familiar logo is staring down at the National League Central. The up and down Cubbies find themselves in first place, with August just around the corner.   The team has battled injuries all season, to key players like Aramis Ramierz, Geovanny Soto, Ryan Dempster, Ted Lilly and Aaron Miles. But somehow the Cubs have scrapped together a 52-45 record, which is good enough for first in the ultra competitive NL Central.   Last night’s game was a perfect example of their season.   Alfonso Soriano was booed by the Wrigley faithful for not running out ...

Cubs 5, Astros 1 F/13: All Is Forgiven Soriano

July 28, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Click here for the photo gallery of Monday's game   It took almost four hours (3:49) and 13 innings, but the Cubs came out on top Monday when Alfonso Soriano hit a walk-off grand slam off Chris Sampson to lead the Cubs to a 5-1 win. No questions, no doubt. Deep to center, and everyone knew it was gone off the crack of the bat. So, after starting the game 0-for-5, with a double play, three strikeouts, and some bad luck that appeared to shake even his faith a bit, he delivered in a way that's just so Soriano. This was a good baseball game ...

Chicago Cubs Trade Rumors: A Really, Really Dumb Idea

July 28, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

On Monday, as the trade winds began to fill more sails around Major League Baseball, one floated through Chicago that might be one of the worst ideas I have ever heard. A number of media outlets, including ESPN's Bruce Levine, have reported that the Chicago Cubs have shown some level of interest in Oakland A's shortstop Orlando Cabrera. Cabrera is in his first season in Oakland after spending last year on Chicago's South Side. While with the White Sox, Cabrera was depicted as a negative influence on the clubhouse and as having a bad attitude. This winter, he moved on to Oakland as ...
