Carlos Zambrano: Thanks, But No Thanks

August 26, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

My latest bold proposal is for the Cubs' most expensive pitcher, not to be confused with their ace, is that Carlos Zambrano should be referred to as "Big Zero" instead of "Big Z" from now on. Why "Zero"? Because that's about what his impact on the Cubs' pennant chances has been this season. Over the weekend, while Zambrano was waiting in Chicago for the Cubs to return from Los Angeles, there were rumors that he was spotted playing shortstop in a local 16-inch softball league. Apparently that's how Zambrano planned on keeping his ailing back and legs from getting rusty between starts. Then ...

Chicago Cubs Mailbag: Different Answers

August 25, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

If any of you are like me, you read the mailbag on cubs.com and, if you are really like me, sometimes you want to see Carrie Muskat, the Cubs beat writer, say what is really happening with the team. Well, here I will take the questions and answer them without having to worry about any repercussions for criticizing the team or front office.   I think I speak for a lot of Cubs fans when I say that I'd like to see Fox in the lineup more often.  With third base and left field pretty tied up, any chance we see Fox ...

2009’s Most Disappointing Team: National League

August 25, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

It's now almost the end of August, and the post season realities of the contenders and pretenders are starting to sort themselves out. It appears that the Colorado Rockies are making Wil Ferrell proud by streaking their way into contention not only for the Wild Card, but they've nearly caught the Dodgers in the West. The Cardinals have won the Central. The Phillies will win the East. There are still some teams that are hanging on to hope, as the Marlins, Braves and Giants of the world chase the Wild Card and lightning in a bottle for one shot at glory. And then ...

Come to Think of It: Five Ways the Cubs Can Build a Winner in 2010 and Beyond

August 25, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Amid Lou Piniella’s recent proclamation that, despite reports to the contrary, he was planning on returning for the 2010 season, there is this little thing called expectations gnawing at Jim Hendry and the Cubs.   While Hendry has certainly messed things up, and Lou seems to be winding down a successful career, they deserve one more shot at bringing a winner to the loyal Cubs fans, who deserve so much more than we've been getting.   Sure, the sale of the team to the Ricketts family, even when finalized, may provide some stability for the franchise. Yet even when fully approved and finalized, don’t ...

Led Zeppelin’s Take on the 2009 Chicago Cubs

August 25, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

You've probably heard everyone who thinks they're anyone give their opinion on the 2009 Cubs.  Yes, they have underachieved. Yes, they have disappointed millions. What you have not heard yet is the Cubs 2009 season in terms of Led Zeppelin songs.  The greatest band ever and the not-so-great Cubs, a match made in heaven. Here is the season recap based on popular songs by Led Zeppelin.   Stairway to Heaven: If heaven is a World Series title, then the Cubs have been lost in their search for the right stairway for 101 years.  Haven't they found the "stairway" sign on the wall?  They're usually clearly ...

Random Thoughts from a Chicago Cubs Fan

I understand why Fuld's parents named him Sam. Helps explain the big S on his chest. Dude...the walls in the major leagues don't give way, buddy.  Seriously, if Sam Fuld and Jake Fox don't start every game the rest of the season, then Lou should be FIRED for the first time in his career. When Randy Wells gave my daughter a baseball at a recent Padres game as she waited along the center field fence, I had to double check to make sure it wasn't Kevin Gregg, since usually it's his balls that sail so easily over the outfield fence. Jay Johnstone, where are ...

Cubs 3, Dodgers 1: Chicago Still Not Good, but Lucky

August 24, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Well, in the end the Cubs were able to salvage some semblance of dignity on this latest road trip, using seven innings of one run ball, and a 4-4 day from Jake Fox to beat the Dodgers 3-1. Sigh. A 2-5 road trip. This is probably going to be the week that the Cubs playoff hopes for 2009 died. With the Cardinals winning 5-2 today, the Cubs are sitting eight games out with 40 to play, and there's not much to do but let the season play out. Wild card? Yeah, I don't think so. I see easily three really good-looking ...

Come To Think Of It: There’s No Crying In Cubs Baseball

August 23, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

"Are you crying? Are you crying? ARE YOU CRYING? There's no crying! THERE'S NO CRYING IN BASEBALL!" That famous line from the movie A League of Their Own notwithstanding, there are plenty of Cubs fans crying over the team's August meltdown, which has left them pretty much all but dead for 2009. Well, maybe not crying literally, but certainly shocked, frustrated, disappointed, angry, sad - you name it, Cubs fans feel it. But not me. Nope. I am fine. Not because I don't care; hey, there is no one who wants to see the Cubs win the World Series more than ...

Exclusive. Jim Hendry/Soriano Contract Negotiations Revealed (Humor)

August 23, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

I have moments ago been handed a video recording from within Jim Hendry's office for that day in 2007 where Soriano was handed his Chicago Cubs contract. Due to a confidentiality agreement that I was forced to sign, I can not reveal to you who handed me this video recording. However with talk of the new ownership and possibly Jim Hendry on his way out, i will say his first name rhymed with bomb, second with picketts. That's all I'm saying, a man of honor will never break a confidentiality agreement * Soriano walks into Hendry's office, adorned in Washington Nationals memorabilia* Hendry: ...

News: Lou PIniella Staying With Chicago Cubs in 2010

August 22, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Memo to Lou Piniella: the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem. Reports out of Chicago (by way of Los Angeles) are that Piniella has guaranteed he will remain on the bench as the manager of the Chicago Cubs next year. Whispers had started that Piniella was considering leaving the Cubs after a disappointing 2009 season. And, with a change in ownership in the not-too-distant future, the likelihood that there would be changes made around (and potentially above) the manager's role made many question if Piniella would want to stay. There have also been signs that Piniella is tiring of the current ...
