Come To Think of It: Cubs’ Giant-Killing Virtually Assures Winning Season

September 27, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

In a season filled with water-cooler tirades, outfielders forgetting how many outs there are, and runners left on base by the truckload, one positive note to this season does exist. With the Cubs' third straight win over the San Francisco Giants today, they assured themselves that they will be no worse than a .500 team. And, assuming they win at least one more game, they are on the verge of a third consecutive winning season. To show you how rare this feat is for our Cubbies, one has to go back to 1972 to find a better winning streak. From 1968 ...

Developing Story: Something To Be Proud of As a Cubs Fan

September 26, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

The Cubs are bad, really bad. This season has been a let down for the Cubs, to say the least. The team that was picked by Sports Illustrated to play in the World Series has been flirting with the .500 mark all season long and haven’t claimed first place in their own division since soon after the All-Star break. A season that was expected to be full of excitement and winning has instead been full of frustration and sub-par play. As the playoff picture is being set, with hardly even a hope of the Cubs being in it as each ...

Come To Think of It: Padres Reportedly Interested in Chicago’s Milton Bradley

September 26, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

One of Cubs GM Jim Hendry's first priorities this offseason is to try and move Milton Bradley, and he just may find a willing trade partner in friend and fellow GM Kevin Towers, according to an ESPN.com report by Jerry Crasnick. On Friday, the San Diego Padres GM said he wouldn't mind having Bradley return to the city he once played in. Left unsaid was "if the price is right." "I haven't had any calls from Jim about him," Towers told ESPN.com. "But I think people kind of know what players we target. We have to take chances sometimes. We took a ...

Lou Piniella’s Destiny Should Be Based on the Remainder of the Cubs Season

September 25, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Let's get some facts straight... 1a. If the Cubs manage to win three out of their next 10 games, they will have had three winning seasons in a row since Lou Piniella took over as manager. 1b. The Cubs will have had five winning seasons since Jim Hendry took over the role of general manager back in mid-2002. 2a. The last Cubs manager to have three winning seasons in a row was Leo Durocher (whose tenure was marked by six winning seasons out of seven but zero playoff appearances). 2b. The last Cubs GM with that many winning seasons was John Holland, who collected ...

Tab’s Official Mea Culpa To Chicago’s Derrek Lee

September 24, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

I like to talk and write about baseball. I love it. That passion is what helped me become a Featured Columnist covering the Chicago Cubs for Bleacher Report. I just adore the game and the Cubs. One of the perks of saying and writing a lot is that there are times when I can admit to being right and gloat about correctly predicting some things. My cap is tipped to you, Milton Bradley, for making my stating the obvious (he's a trainwreck and wouldn't last more than a year in Chicago) look like genius. There is, however, the other side of the coin. ...

Breaking Up Is Hard to Lou: Cubs’ Piniella Needs to Go

September 24, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

The time has come. It pains me to say, but Lou Piniella should not be the manager of the Chicago Cubs next season. Lou has mentioned himself that this year's club lacked the chemistry of the past few years. I agree. The 2007 and 2008 team's must have had good chemistry, because the team was not extremely talented. The lack of talent is Jim Hendry's responsibility (see http://bleacherreport.com/articles/258580-wait-til-next-year-2010-cubs-to-look-awfully-familiar) but Lou is not without blame either. While the manager can have an effect on team chemistry, there is something much more important he must do. He has to demand that his players play baseball ...

Come To Think of It: Milton’s Mommy Sticks Up for Poor Misunderstood Son

September 23, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Oh, pity poor little Milton Bradley. The millionaire baseball player's life is so hard that his mommy needs to come to his defense. What is this, elementary school or the big leagues? Look, we all know that signing Bradley to a three-year contract was foolish. Cubs GM Jim Hendry ought to be taken out to the woodshed and spanked by new owner Tom Ricketts for this ridiculous display of poor judgement. But some of the things that Bradley's mom said just confirms that wackiness apparently runs in the family. Speaking to the Chicago Sun-Times on Tuesday, Milton's mother, Charlena Rector said that "When ...

What Were You Thinking? Milton Bradley Edition

September 23, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

I'm sure there are a large and very vocal majority of Cubs fans that are trying to figure out how exactly the Cubs gave $30 million bucks to Milton Bradley. Didn't they know that Bradley was a nut job? Or how about his injury history? Did Hendry really believe that Milton Bradley could fit in with the Cubs?Well, after some archive digging, I think whatever rationale the Cubs had at the time, no matter how illogical or stupid it looks now, will come to light. So much has been made that the Cubs signed Bradley because he led the AL in ...

Tyler Colvin: Does This Cubs Prospect Have Any Fantasy Value?

September 23, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Last night the Cubs’ Tyler Colvin made his major league debut, going one for three with an RBI in the place of the recently suspended Milton Bradley. The 2006 first-round pick is making the jump from Double-A, where he hit .300 with 14 HR and 50 RBI in just 307 AB. Considering he was in the lineup, and considering that the Cubs are 10 games behind the Cardinals in the NL West, it would appear that he is here to play. Before we dub him a must-use option in deeper fantasy formats, let’s take a little bit of a closer look.  Before this season, ...
