Chicago Cubs: Next Year Will Have to Wait Again

September 22, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

For the first time since 2006, the Cubs will be sitting at home for the postseason after what many Cubs fans will consider a disappointing season. Heading into the 2009 campaign, the Cubs and Brewers appeared to be the favorites in the division, with many thinking this could be their year. But then the season actually started. Injuries to Aramis Ramirez, Big Z, and many important role players and starters could be to blame for the mediocre season. Then again, they are the Cubs and may have not won any more games with these guys in the lineup. So the big questions will be what ...

Ryan Dempster: One of the Worst Free Agent Signings?

September 22, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

SI.com's Ted Keith recently outlined "the worst" free agent signings of the 2008 offseason, most of which were not surprising. Oliver Perez and Milton Bradley have been two of the biggest disappointments in baseball. Edgar Renteria and Pat Burrell have shown very little at the dish this season. But there was one name that I was shocked to see in the "worst" column: Ryan Dempster. "A career year in 2008 that included personal bests in wins, ERA and WHIP earned Dempster a sizable raise from the three-year, $15.5 million deal that expired last year. But so far he hasn't exactly justified ...

Cubs Say Farewell to a Legend as Milton Bradley Leaves Chicago

September 22, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

And so another chapter ends in a city that has witnessed one of its teams win a World Series title in the last 93 years—and the team in particular is NOT the Cubs. The Cubs, under manager Lou Pinella and crow-eating general manager Jim "Boo-Boo" Hendry, ended their ties with two-timing renegade switch-hitter Milton Bradley by suspending him for the rest of the 2009 Major League season for decrying their ineptitude to win any title he deems "substantial to my own sanity." "There is a reason why the team I am glad to get the [expletive] out of has been futile for ...

Take a Chance on Bad Boy Milton Bradley?

Milton Bradley doesn't like the Chicago Cubs, and the Cubs aren't exactly crazy about him either. It's been another widely publicized season of scrutiny for the Cubs slugger and now he'll spend the remainder of the season on the bench thanks to some comments he made to the media. When the Cubs initially signed  Bradley, it was like taking a girl home at the end of the night after consuming several gallons of beer; initially it seems like a good idea, but when the light of reality finally shines on the situation, things don't look all that pretty anymore. Now the Chicago ...

Come to Think of It: Carlos Zambrano Trade Options

September 21, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune first reported that the Cubs will explore a deal for Carlos Zambrano, though Bleacher Report readers on the Cubs site know that I floated the concept more than a month ago.   It just makes sense. For one thing, the Cubs are seriously weighed down with expensive, long-term contracts that limit their ability to improve a team that was very disappointing this season.   Second, Zambrano, for all of his obvious talent, is a head case who can’t seem to keep his emotions in check to channel that energy in a positive manner. Instead, he sulks, he gets ...

Milton Bradley Strikes Out Again, Next Team to Offer the Guy a Shot Is Batty

It's getting towards late September and that means several annual rituals are starting at the altar of Major League Baseball. Certain contenders are pulling away from the fading pack, like the Colorado Rockies and Boston Red Sox in the races for the respective Wild Cards. A former lock for the postseason is teetering and threatening to hand the keys over to a hard-charging spoiler—I'm looking at you, Detroit Tigers. Additionally, you've got the year-end award hysteria starting to settle over baseball. But my favorite rite of a season's passage is the newest addition—another messy and public divorce involving Milton Bradley and whatever poor ...

Come To Think of It: Breaking Down Individual Cubs Players for 2010

September 21, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

As the Cubs get ready for the first round of organizational talks, I thought I would take a look at some of the Cubs players currently on the roster and project their futures with the team.   Jim Hendry and his merry band of baseball cronies can chew on this as they look forward to 2010.     Aaron Miles. Status: Signed through 2010   If he can’t dump his salary (Hendry should not ask for anything in return), then I suggest the Cubs eat his contract. He is of little to no value offensively. And a team that hits like it has this year just can’t ...

Milton Bradley, Take a Look in the Mirror

September 21, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

On Sunday, the Chicago Cubs' career of the most disappointing guy to hit Chicago, ever since Kevin Orie, ended. No, it wasn't Alfonso Soriano (who I'm sure isn't going anywhere, anytime soon), but your favorite moody right fielder, Milton Bradley. Bradley was suspended by the Cubs prior to the Cubs-Cardinals game in St. Louis, which was won by the Cubs 6-3 in 11 innings, after a three-run home run by Jake Fox. The reason for the suspension was due to the fact that Bradley, who was signed by the team to a $30 million deal before the start of the 2009 season, has ...

Game Over: Controversial Chicago Cub Milton Bradley Suspended for Rest of Season

September 21, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Filed: Sept. 19, 2009 In a surprise move, the Chicago Cubs have suspended outfielder Milton Bradley for the remainder of the season over controversial comments made about the organization and its fan base to the media. With the move, Bradley's career as a Cub has, in all likelihood, drawn to a close. Outfielder Tyler Colvin is expected to be called up from Double-A on Monday to provide outfield help. The crux of the matter is comments made in an interview recently with Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald. In it, Bradley makes a number of negative comments about the team and its fans, ...
