Lou Piniella: Quick Retirement Ends His Overrated Career

August 22, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

"A good ball club" - Yogi Berra, when asked about what makes a good manager. Recent history has shown what a good baseball team can do to the perception of a manager. Dusty Baker suddenly has his "magic" back now that the Reds have stocked up with great young talent, and veterans that still have the skills like Scott Rolen. Joe Torre is suddenly just another guy now that the Dodgers consist of a mediocre roster. Joe Girardi went from a failure in 2008 to a great manager again in 2009. Terry Francona went from a failed Phillies manager to a great Red Sox manager. Even ...

Chicago Cubs Manager Lou Piniella to Step Down After Today’s Game

August 22, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

The series finale game against the Atlanta Braves will be "Sweet" Lou's last game as a manager.  Earlier this year, he did announce he intended to retire after this season, but plans do change. Piniella said of stepping down, "When I previously announced my intentions to retire at the end of the season, a primary reason for my decision was that it would allow me to spend more valuable time with my family. That time has unfortunately gotten here sooner than I could have ever expected. As many know, the several weeks since that announcement was made have been very difficult on a ...

Chicago Cubs: Lou Piniella to Retire After Sunday’s Game

August 22, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella has seen enough of this season apparently and has decided to retire from it and his career after Sunday's game against the Atlanta Braves. In mid-July, Piniella had announced that this would be his final season in the big leagues, after 18 seasons as a player and 22 as a manager.Third base coach Mike Quade will serve manager the rest of the Cubs' season. This will be Quade's first managing gig in the majors as he has managed in the minor league systems of the Cubs, Washington Nationals, Philadelphia Phillies and Oakland Athletics.According to the team, the ...

Ryne Sandberg Not Likely To Manage Chicago Cubs If It’s Up To Jim Hendry

August 21, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Assuming that everything that owner Tom Ricketts has told us is true, and Jim Hendry really will be leading the search for the next Cubs manager to replace the retiring (retired?) Lou Piniella, do not believe that former Cubs legend Ryne Sandberg is a lock to be the man. In fact, if you read into the tea leaves, Hendry doesn't feel that Ryne is ready to be a major league manager and instead would prefer one with previous major league experience. Many feel that Sandberg is a great bet to be named the next Cubs skipper, given his legacy and the fact ...

Chicago Cubs: Bullpen Blows Save for a 5-3 Loss To San Diego Padres

August 20, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

The San Diego Padres are simply too strong for the Cubs. The Chicago Cubs could not avoid the sweep by the NL West leaders Thursday afternoon.  Once again, their bullpen sank and a careless defensive play in the seventh inning put them down 5-3 in the series finale. Carlos Zambrano, the Cubs’ starter, did not have a stellar performance.  However, he managed to limit the Padres to one run and four hits in six innings.  Even though he walked far too many batters—giving six Padres free passes to first base—he got out of his jams, stranding runners one inning after another. Well...except in ...

Chicago Cubs: Lee Traded, Fuld Recalled, Colvin Getting Reps at First

August 20, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

In a move that was slightly surprising, Derrek Lee was traded to the Braves on Wednesday. It wasn't really a surprise that the Cubs wanted to trade him. After all, they did try to make a swap with the Angels involving the veteran first baseman not too long ago. And it wasn't a shock that someone would want the former triple crown candidate. Not only has Derrek Lee put together some very good seasons in his career (not the least of which came just last season), but he's a great clubhouse presence that will serve a contending team such as the Braves ...

Chicago Cubs Starting Rotation for 2011 Looks Ugly Right Now

August 20, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Unless Cubs GM Jim Hendry makes some significant moves this off season, the Cubs rotation for next year could be really bad. In fact, the Cubs top starter looks to be Ryan Dempster, who would be a fourth or fifth starter on any other "contending" club. Of course, that is assuming the Cubs will be contenders next season, an assumption that is not likely to be realized. Even in an average rotation, one would have to look long and hard to find a worse number one than Dempster. Dempster isn't bad, mind you, but he just isn't an ace despite being paid like one. Meanwhile, ...

Late last month, in Cooperstown, New York, Andre Dawson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame as a Montreal Expo. This was much to Andre's chagrin, as he'd hoped to go into the Hall of Fame as a Chicago Cub.You see, Andre spent 11 of his 21 seasons playing for the Expos. He won the Rookie of the Year for the team in 1977, and won six of his eight Gold Gloves in Montreal. Most of his best years and his career stats were accumulated in Montreal.Nevertheless, as Andre told us on that beautiful day last month, it was ...
