Chicago Cubs: 2013 Scouting Report, Roster Breakdown and Prediction

October 22, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

The 2012 season for the Chicago Cubs was as disastrous as we all thought. It was actually two games worse than either I thought or hoped. I'm not sure where reality lies, so it's a distinct possibility that my heart's wishes clouded my brain's logic in thinking they would not lose 100 games. They did. I'm sadder for it.I do believe the Cubs are moving in the right direction. I think the young team of Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer are exactly what we need. An infusion of young energy is a welcomed change from the stuffy atmosphere that's been plaguing ...

What Chicago Cubs Fans Can Take from Their Series in Minnesota

It's not so much of an architectural tweak as it is a demolition. There are certain laws in Chicago, as there are in many other cities, regarding reconstruction. While permits and zoning laws are brutally difficult to navigate if you choose to tear a structure limb from limb in an effort to start with a clean slate, they are drastically different if you choose to keep a bathroom wall from the original structure. One is a tear down. The other is "an addition". If you keep any part of the original structure like a bathroom wall—ONE BATHROOM WALL—you are not forced to ...

Chicago Cubs: What the First Month of the Season Has Taught Us About Our Roster

We knew they'd be bad. How bad was the question. My standard response was "Just don't lose 100." I'm okay with a rebuilding year. Happy to see it, actually. I—like you, I'm sure—am just so tired of seeing retreads added to an aging core that wasn't that good to begin with.We stand at 11-16, six games out of first. This record could easily be three or four games better if Carlos Marmol doesn't blow a few of them and Kerry Wood doesn't blow one game early in the year.I can't fathom a Cubs fan who wouldn't be ecstatic with a 14-12 ...

Aramis Ramirez: How Will He Be Received by Cubs Fans?

April 9, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Aramis Ramirez returns to Wrigley tonight. Not since his days as a Pittsburgh Pirate has he held a view at Wrigley other than from the home dugout.I think I'm looking forward to seeing what type of reception he receives from the home crowd, the fans who cheered him on for the last nine years.Lamar Odom returned to Los Angeles in March only to hear the likes of many boos. Something he called confusing and hurtful. Why would Laker fans boo Lamar Odom? The guy was traded. He didn't ask to leave. He's married to a Kardashian, one of their demi-gods ...

Chicago Cubs: What the 2012 Roster Should Look Like

To clear up any confusion, I am not Theo Epstein. It's an easy mistake to make. We're both incredibly talented.I think I know and understand what Jed Hoyer and Theo are doing with the roster. More Magellan than Columbus but hell, even if we veer drastically off course, but discover something great in the process I'm in.I heard a great phrase recently that applies to so many facets of life if not life as a whole: "If you're eating a sh*t sandwich, chances are you probably ordered it". This phrase perfectly describes the fragile psyche of a Cubs' fan. We ...

Ron Santo: Why Isn’t Chicago Cubs Great in the Hall of Fame?

November 28, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Ron Santo played third base in the Major Leagues from 1960 to 1974, 14 of those years with the Chicago Cubs. In his career, he compiled 342 HR, 1,331 RBI and had a lifetime batting average of .277.  He was in the top five voting for the Rookie of the Year. He was a nine-time All Star, a five-time Gold Glove winner and in the top 10 for MVP four times. Third base is the hardest position to play to get into the Hall of Fame. Third base has the fewest representatives in the Hall. Why is this?  To understand ...
