2011 Fantasy Baseball Projections: Buy or Sell Chicago Cubs’ Aramis Ramirez?

May 29, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Aramis Ramirez has averaged 28 HR, 96 RBI and a .295 batting clip a year since 2004, despite missing 118 games over the last two seasons. His torrid 2010 second half (15 HR, 51 RBI in 62 games) led many (myself included) to believe Ramirez would return to his former 25-HR, 100-RBI days this season, but he has yet to produce as such. The soon-to-be 33-year-old third basemen whacked just his second dinger of the season on Sunday and sported a .280 batting clip in 175 at-bats entering the game. The questions rises, then: Is Aramis Ramirez a good buy-low candidate? When looking at Ramirez’s 2011 ...

2011 Fantasy Baseball Projections: What’s Wrong with Cubs’ Ryan Dempster?

April 30, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Chicago Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster allowed seven earned runs for the second consecutive start on Thursday, recording just one out before being yanked.Along the way, he walked four, hit a batter and yielded four hits, including a grand slam to Stephen Drew. Through six starts, the usually reliable Dempster now sports an unsightly 9.58 ERA and 1.87 WHIP.Given his steady production over the last three seasons (3.49 ERA, 8.20 K/9, 3.28 BB/9), one can't help but wonder: What's wrong with Ryan Dempster? Scouts noted Dempster's dip in velocity Thursday night, clocking him in the 85 to 90 mph range. For the ...

2011 Fantasy Baseball Projections: How Good Is Chicago Cubs’ Starlin Castro?

April 4, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Chicago Cubs’ shortstop Starlin Castro is 8-for-13 (.615) with four runs and one RBI through three games this season, and already has the fantasy baseball community buzzing over his potential. Castro’s 2011 spring totals turned some heads last month, as he displayed surprising power: 66 at-bats, 14 runs, nine XBH (four HRs), 15 RBI, two steals, .348/.386/.621. Fresh off an impressive rookie season which saw him hit .300 in 463 at-bats, the question must be asked: How good is Starlin Castro? The Cubs signed the Dominican Republic native at the tender age of 16 in 2006. After holding his own (.305 average) in two seasons of rookie ball, he ...

2011 Fantasy Projections, No. 92: Carlos Marmol’s Strikeouts in Perspective

March 18, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Our 2011 fantasy baseball projections will be released one by one until the top 100 players have been revealed. These rankings consider past achievements, current performance and expected future results based on standard 5×5 H2H settings. Carlos Marmol had one of the most mind-boggling seasons in 2010 at any position. His strikeout total of 138 was higher than that of 10 starters who logged at least 200 innings. His strikeout rate (15.99) was the highest among both starters and relievers in at least 40 years (I called off the search after 1970). Having said that, Marmol’s contact rate (61.3 percent) was by far ...

Our 2011 fantasy baseball projections will be released one-by-one until the top 100 players have been revealed. These rankings consider past achievements, current performance and expected future results based on standard 5×5 H2H settings. Since 2004, Aramis Ramirez has averaged 28 HRs, 96 RBI and a .295 batting average per season. That’s including the 80 games he missed in 2009 due to a dislocated shoulder, as well as the thumb, oblique and quad injuries that lingered last season, limiting him to just 124 games while yielding a career-low .241 batting average. Yet, despite his troubles last season, Ramirez’s 25 HRs and 83 ...

What’s Wrong With Aramis Ramirez?

June 8, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

While waiver wire gems such as Jose Bautista (18 HRs, 45 RBI) and Carlos Silva (8 wins, 2.93 ERA) are unexpectedly dominating fantasy leagues, perennial All-Stars such as Mark Teixeira (.211 BA) and Dan Haren (4.83 ERA) are struggling mightily. The most perplexing case, however, is that of Cubs third baseman Aramis Ramirez . In 178 at-bats this season, the soon-to-be 32-year-old sports an embarrassing .168/.232/.285 triple-slash that even Mario Mendoza wouldn’t claim. Normally one of the top sluggers at his position, (32 HRs, 105 RBI, .302 BA per season from ‘04 to ‘08) Ramirez has just 11 extra-base hits and 22 RBI through nine weeks of ...
